What is the Seasonal Worker Scheme?

The SWS scheme was introduced in 2019 as a test pilot, originally run by two operators.

As announced by the government on the 24th of December 2021, the scheme has been extended until the end of 2024, increasing the number of work permits to 30,000 and a further 10,000 to be added if deemed necessary. And increasing the number of scheme Operators to four.

In 2023 the scheme has been extended to 40,000 and 6 operators.

There is also a specific Poultry visa.

Under the scheme the operators act as sponsors under the immigration framework (tier 5).

The scheme allows for the supply of workers to the edible and ornamental horticultural sector, which is defined by Defra as:

  • Protected Vegetables (glasshouse production)
  • Field Vegetables (outside production including herbs, leafy salads and potatoes)
  • Soft Fruits (outdoor and covered)
  • Top Fruits
  • Vines and Bines (hops and Grapes)
  • Mushrooms.
  • bulbs and cut flowers, such as daffodils, grown outdoors and indoors
  • Pot plants, such as seasonal bedding plants like pansies, violas, germaniums and poinsettias
  • Hardy ornamental nursery stock such as Christmas trees, shrubs, roses
  • Ornamental trees and perennials
  • Tree and forest nurseries

The visa is for a maximum period of 6 months and workers can only be in the UK on the visa once in 12 months – there must be clear break of 6 months between visas.

You can apply for a Seasonal Worker visa to come to the UK and work in:

  • horticulture for up to 6 months – for example, picking fruit and vegetables or flowers
  • poultry from 2 October to 31 December, in the same year

You need to apply for poultry Seasonal Worker visas by 15 November each year.

You can apply for horticulture Seasonal Worker visas at any time of year.

In 2023 the scheme has been extended to 6 operators and to hire 45,000 temporary workers worldwide through the UK Seasonal work visa scheme, potentially increasing the quota to 10,000 if needed.

Accommodation is normally available on the placement, generally this is mobile home accommodation, shared with other workers. rent varies, but as a guideline £63.70 per week is normal.

How long it takes

You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before the day you are due to start work in the UK. This date is listed on your certificate of sponsorship.

As part of your application, you’ll need to prove your identity and provide your documents.

You may need to allow extra time if you need an appointment to do this. You’ll find out if you need one when you start your application.

Getting a decision

Once you’ve applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you’ll usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

How long you can stay

You can stay in the UK:

  • up to 6 months for horticulture work
  • from 18 October to 31 December each year for poultry work

You can enter the UK as soon as your visa is valid (up to 14 days before the start date of your job).

What are the requirements for seasonal workers in UK?

Certificate of sponsorship

A certificate of sponsorship is a reference number which holds information about the job and your personal details. It’s not an actual certificate or paper document.

Your sponsor will give you your certificate of sponsorship reference number.

You’ll need to add your certificate of sponsorship reference number to your visa application form – you can only use it once.

Your certificate of sponsorship is valid for 3 months from the date it’s assigned to you.

What is the UK seasonal visa sponsorship 2023?

The UK Seasonal Worker Visa 2023 is a Temporary Work visa that allows applicants from any country to come for seasonal Jobs such as picking fruit and vegetables or flowers, poultry Seasonal Worker, or horticulture.
You are allowed to work and stay in the UK for up to 6 months. You will most like to work on Farms.

UK Poultry seasonal worker visa

As announced by the UK government in June 2022, the UK Seasonal Worker Scheme has been extended until the end of 2024, with 2,000 visas being made available for the Poultry sector.

The visas will allow seasonal workers to come to the UK to work in the poultry sector between October and December, ensuring producers are able to effectively deal with the festive peak in production.

The workers will be permitted to work in positions that are seasonal, and in a number of different roles such as:

  • butchers,
  • catchers,
  • pluckers,
  • processing and packing.

On the 13 September 2022, UK government approved new UK seasonal worker visa route operators specifically for the poultry sector.

Following a competitive tender process, ProForce Ltd and RE Recruitment were chosen as one of two suppliers for the UK’s seasonal worker visa scheme for the poultry sector.

This means that ProForce LtdandRE Recruitment  can sponsor workers for them to apply for a seasonal visa.

The government confirmed the scheme on 13 June 2022 in the UK Government food strategy.

The visa route will run from 2022 to 2024 and currently allows up to 2,000 visas for temporary migrant workers to work in the UK poultry sector.

The quota for the Seasonal Worker visa route can change each year. As the number of visas granted across the scheme is confirmed at 2,000 for 2022, the two companies will each receive half of the allocated certificates of sponsorship.

Certificates of Sponsorship (and subsequent Visas) will begin to be issued in early October, and applicants will be placed throughout October, November and December.

As a condition of the scheme, workers will be permitted to stay in the UK until 31 December 2023.

What are the costs for workers?

You should expect to pay for the following:

  • VISA Application Fee, £259, payable directly to the UK Government website www.gov.uk/season-worker-visa

  • Depending on country, a maximum fee of £80 to TLS Contact to register your biometrics for your VISA

  • Travel to the UK and onwards to the farm. The amount will depend on your country of origin.

UK Seasonal Worker Visa Application Process

Applications for Temporary Work- UK Seasonal Worker Visas must be submitted from outside of the UK.

There is no time limit on application for workers in the edible or ornamental horticulture sector.  

The earliest you can apply for a Temporary Work – Seasonal Worker Visa is 3 months before the date on which you are due to start work. This can be found on your Certificate of Sponsorship.

If the Certificate of Sponsorship confirms that the role is in the poultry production sector, the date of application must be on or before 15 November in each year.

You should receive a decision on your Temporary Work – Seasonal Worker Visa application within 3 weeks.

Duration of a Temporary Work – UK Seasonal Worker Visa

If you apply for a Temporary Work – UK Seasonal Worker Visa to work in the horticulture sector and your application is successful, you will be granted permission to enter and remain in the UK for either the period of the job on your Certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days before and 14 days after that period maximum period or 6 months in any 12 month period, whichever is shorter.

If you apply for a Temporary Work – Seasonal UK Worker Visa to work in the poultry production sector and your application is successful, you will be granted permission to enter and remain in the UK for either the period of the job on the Certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days before and 14 days after that period or the period commencing on 2 October and ending on 31 December in the year on which the application is submitted (inclusive), whichever is shorter.

Money to support yourself

You must have at least £1,270 (approximately KES 218,046.22) in your bank account to show you can support yourself in the UK.

You will need to have had the money available for at least 28 days in a row. Day 28 must be within 31 days of applying for this visa.

You’ll usually need to show proof of this when you apply, unless your sponsor can cover your costs during your first month in the UK, up to £1,270.

If your sponsor can support you instead

Your certificate of sponsorship must confirm this. Your sponsor will need to complete the ‘sponsor certifies maintenance’ section on your certificate. This is under ‘Additional data’.

To be eligible for a UK Agriculture Worker, applicants must be 18 years or older, the legal age to work in the UK. Additionally, they must have a sponsor who can provide them with a Certification of Sponsorship (CoS) and must provide bank statements with sufficient funds to support themselves while in the UK.
