While pretty much ‘everyone in Asia and Europe can fly’ thanks to low-cost airlines as Easyjet, and RyanAir, AirAsia, Tigerair, Scoot, etc; in Kenya, flying is still considered a luxury.
In the recent past though, the emergence of carriers such as Jambojet, Fly540, etc, this is slowly changing.
Every once in a while, these airlines put up promo sales that last anywhere from 48 hours, 72 hours, or even a week.
Just recently, Jamobjet put up a 72 hour sale for flights departing Nairobi to Ukunda, Mombasa, Kisumu, Malindi, and Eldoret.
If you’ve been trying to score Jambojet promo fares but always fail to get any or only hear about the sales after the deadline, it’s probably time for a reality check, figure out how this sales business operates.
- Only a limited number of seats are put on promotion. An aircraft has only so many number of seats. And if it’s not obvious, not all those seats are going to be put on sale. The airline is not a charity organization. There is a bunch of shareholders out there waiting for dividends at the end of the financial year. If you’re traveling with all your 9 aunties, 6 cousins, mum, dad, hubby, and all your high school classmates, and you all want to take advantage of the sale, and be on the same flight, nice try.
- You need to be early. That saying “the early bird catches the worm” has never been more true that when it comes to snabbing a Jambojet promo fare. The first step towards snagging a promo fare is knowing when the sale is going to happen.

How to Prepare for the Promo Fare
Booking a promo fare is not equivalent to a walk in the park.

Bear in mind that you’re not the only one who’s looking to travel to Kisumu Dala or Mombasa Raha on a dirt cheap airline ticket.
Many other people are also timing those very seats!
- Sign up for a fast, reliable internet connection. This is a no brainer. Airline’s websites tend to drag during a sale because of a sudden influx of people all trying to get on at the same time. And woe unto you if this predicament is coupled with an internet connection that sucks. Fortunately, once you enter your departure and arrival destinations, through Jambojet’s calender view, you can see fares for the whole month for that particular sector. Jambojet even highlights in pink for you the lowest fare.
- Sign up for a Jambojet account. Once you signup for a Jambojet account, your details will be saved for quick and easy booking. Thus, you will not be able to view your upcoming flights and manage your active bookings; but at check out, you won’t need to type your personal and credit card details. This time savings adds up to your odds of snabbing a seat whenever there’s a seat sale. Signing up could also ensure that you get early access or early notification of the sales and sometime access to exclusive member only deals.
- Be flexible with your travel dates, destination, and time. It goes without say that getting a seat on obvious and popular destinations such as Kisumu or Mombasa will need a great deal of luck. And so is departing on Friday and returning on Sunday. That’s the clock-work every Nairobian operates on. Be flexible abeg… Have a plan B in times of destination, date, and time. Check out the routes in advance and have a work-around along those lines.
- Have your travel companion’s personal details beforehand. These include everything that’d be necessary for booking a flight. Don’t wait until check out time that’s when you start calling requesting for your significant others’names as they appear on their ID, among other queries.
- Be patient. Booking a seat on sale is difficult. You will need the patience of a saint, seriously. That’s the day when internet itaanguka, ama site i crush. Don’t you give up the first or umpteenth time this happens. Just keep at it! Mvumilivu hula mbivu, remember.
How to Book
- Visit Jambojet’s official website: www.jambojet.com.
- Choose your origin, destination, travel dates, and number of travelers. Book for one person at a time. Increase your chances of having promo fares displayed by booking one person at a time. Actually my theory has always been that even in the unfortunate event that you only get one promo seat and another seat at regular fare, you will still have had a remarkable saving.
- Click SEARCH. If there are too many people accessing the website at the same time, you may not go through immediately. Or the site may crush all together. Vumilia.
- Select your flights. If you’re lucky enough to make it up to this point, select your preferred flight. Alternatively, click on the calendar view to see alternative dates. Jambojet will highlight the lowest fare in pink. Once you find a seat on a date and price that you want, select it. Agree on the terms and conditions (at the bottom left of the screen) and then click the blue CONTINUE button on the bottom right corner of your screen.
- Enter traveler details. If you are already signed up to your Jambojet account, simply select your name and the details will popuate. Otherwise, you will need to enter the details at this point. That is full names, birth dates, document type, and document number.
- Choose your add-ons. (optional). These include checked-in baggage, special baggage, etc. Click CONTINUE.
- Select a seat (optional). If you don’t mind where you sit, select skip seat selection at bottom of the page
- Review your booking details for accuracy. Make any corrections as necessary.
- Enter contact details of the traveler. Click on Subscribe to JamboMail to receive regular sale fares and also on Remember my details for next time.
- Pay. You can pay via credit card, debit card, Mobille Money (Airtel or M-Pesa), or by way of Voucher.
And that’s pretty much it!
Once your payment is received, check your e-mail for the detailed itinerary and ticket confirmation.
