I Sold My First TikTok Series: A Journey of Creativity, Doubt, and Success

What's Covered in This Article

What is Series on TikTok?

The Series feature on TikTok enables qualified creators to share an exclusive compilation of premium content behind a payment barrier aka paywall, allowing them to earn compensation for their content.

Within a Series, creators have the flexibility to include a maximum of 80 videos, with each video spanning from 30 seconds to 20 minutes in length.

I compiled my first set of series around the topic of claiming asylum in Canada and the other one on the topic of LMIA – exempt jobs in Canada.

So far I have made 10 sales on the first series!

Here’s how it happened…

The Inner Debate

Embarking on the journey of creating a TikTok series was not a decision I took lightly.

As a content creator, I was constantly grappling with the ever-evolving trends on social media. The idea of a TikTok series had been lingering in the back of my mind for a while, but the thought of committing to a sustained project brought along a wave of uncertainty.

In the introverted corners of my mind, doubts echoed: Would anyone even watch it? Was I creative enough to sustain a series? The fear of failure almost kept me from taking the plunge. Yet, amidst the hesitation, a small voice urged me to explore the uncharted territory and embrace the challenge.

The Creative Process Unveiled – Wasn’t Too Bad

Once I made the decision to dive into the world of TikTok series creation, the real work began.

Crafting an engaging narrative that would captivate an audience in long-form, but still attention-grabbing clips proved to be both an art and a science.

Planning, scripting, and filming became a routine, and my creative muscles were put to the test.

As the series took shape, I found myself immersed in a whirlwind of creativity. The challenges of producing content for a platform with such a dynamic audience pushed me to think outside the box. Embracing TikTok’s unique format and trends while staying true to my vision became a delicate balancing act. The process was demanding, but the joy of seeing my ideas come to life kept me fueled.

From Creation to Sale

The moment of truth arrived when I completed my first TikTok series. The blend of relief and excitement lingered in the air. However, the journey didn’t end there. As luck would have it, an unexpected opportunity presented itself – the chance to sell my series. The prospect of monetizing my creative endeavor was both thrilling and nerve-wracking.

Negotiations and discussions ensued, and to my surprise, the process “wasn’t too bad.” What started as a personal project evolved into a valuable commodity. The series found a new home, and in that transaction, I discovered the commercial potential of my creative pursuits.

4 Learning Lessons from Creating a TikTok Series

  1. Embrace the Unknown: Stepping out of your comfort zone is where growth happens. The doubts and uncertainties I faced initially were a natural part of the creative process. Embracing the unknown allowed me to explore new horizons and unlock my creative potential.
  2. Adaptability is Key: TikTok is a dynamic platform, and trends evolve rapidly. Being adaptable and willing to pivot my content strategy was crucial to keeping the series relevant and engaging. Flexibility in creativity proved to be a valuable asset.
  3. Consistency Pays Off: Building a series required a commitment to consistency. Regular uploads and a coherent narrative kept the audience invested. This lesson extended beyond TikTok; the discipline of consistency became a cornerstone of my creative endeavors.
  4. Monetize Your Passion: What started as a personal project turned into a monetizable asset. Recognizing the value of my creative work and exploring opportunities for monetization transformed my perspective on content creation. Passion and profit can coexist.
  5. TikTok Series Covers are not permanent: In the course of selling my first TikTok series, I encountered some valuable insights that added to the overall learning experience. These aspects shed light on certain intricacies within the platform, influencing how I approached the creative and commercial dimensions of my series. After you’ve posted your Series, you are able to rearrange your video order, edit the name, description, and cover up to five times. This is unlike the case of  TikTok video AFTER you’ve posted whereby sadly, the current solution is to delete the video with the bad cover and re-upload the original. Then you can select or upload your preferred cover image. Obviously, that’s a pitiful solution, but it’s the only one at this time.
  6. TikTok Series Prices are Permanent. One notable permanency is related to the pricing. In my eagerness to launch my series, I posted the cheapest available price of $0.99 and 1.999, anticipating the ability to adjust it later. However, once a price is set, it becomes permanent. The inability to modify the price post-sale has left me in a bit of a quandary.
  7. On a more positive note, I discovered that a TikTok series can be ever-growing.  After you’ve posted your TikTok Series, you are able to rearrange your video order, edit the name, description, and cover up to five times. You cannot add or delete content from your TikTok Series after it is posted. All uploading and editing can only be done via the Series WebApp. This flexibility allows creators to add more videos to the series after publication.
  8. Promoting your TikTok Series. One crucial lesson I learned during this journey is the importance of promotion. Tagging your TikTok series in TikTok videos and on Lives significantly boosts exposure, an essential element for success. This aspect is particularly noteworthy for those seeking passive income, as I discovered I had made 10 sales days after the fact. Recognizing the potential for passive income, I now understand the importance of consistent promotion to maximize exposure.

Looking ahead, I am optimistic about reaching higher levels of success and plan on creating several more series on topics close to my heart, including relocation, legit jobs abroad, visa guides, and traveling on a weak third world country passport. These lessons have provided me with valuable insights that will undoubtedly shape my approach to future creative endeavors on TikTok.

In conclusion, the journey from debating the creation of a TikTok series to successfully selling it was a rollercoaster of emotions and creative exploration. It taught me that the creative process is not always linear, and embracing challenges can lead to unexpected rewards. The experience has left me inspired and ready to tackle new creative ventures with a newfound confidence.
