Your potential employer must confirm their eligibility for one of the two streams, before they can begin their GTS application via the GTS website. Employers have the option to submit applications online, by mail, or by fax. The application must include information about the employer, the foreign worker, plus the job offer, including details about salary and benefits.

Employer submits Labour Market Benefits Plan

If applying to GTS for the first time, your potential employer must also submit a Labour Market Benefits Plan demonstrating how they will benefit the Canadian labour market by hiring you. If a Category A, the employer must show how they will increase jobs creation for Canadians. If a Category B employer, they must show how they will increase skills and training investment for Canadians. In addition, your potential employer must show how they will achieve any two of the following complementary benefits:

  • Job creation
  • Investment in skills and training
  • Increase in workplace diversity
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Enhanced company performance
  • Best company practices or policies

Employer pays GTS processing fee

Finally, your potential employer must pay a processing fee of CAD $1,000 for each foreign worker they wish to employer.

The entire GTS application process by the employer typically 10 business days. If your potential employer’s application is successful, then they will receive a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) which you will use to apply for a work permit.

Step 3: Apply for your Canadian Work Permit and Visa

Use your potential employer’s positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to apply for a Canadian work permit. The processing time is about 10 business days or 2 weeks.

To get two-week processing, you must:

  • answer “Yes” when asked if you have a written offer from an employer in Canada
  • select “a work permit with a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)” when asked what type of work permit you are applying for
  • answer “Yes” when asked if your employers LMIA was issued under the “Global Talent Stream” (applicants applying under the International Mobility Program don’t have to answer yes to this question)
  • Apply online from outside Canada

Once your work permit application is approved, you’ll be authorized to travel to Canada and start your new position!
