Epic Solo Trip to Switzerland

Solo trip to switzerland
A 5-minute guide for a solo epic trip to Switzerland covering tips on how to get around, must see and do, language, time-keeping culture, etc.
That time I scored a ticket on Kenya Airways from Nairobi to Geneva, Switzerland for $380 return.
Having arrived Geneva at 8:30 am in the morning, I toured the city during the day before taking a train to Zermatt where I spent 2 nights.
Thereafter, I left for Lauterbrunnen village where I spent the rest of my vacation before returning to Geneva for the flight back home.

Pro visit tips and quick observations:

It’s super expensive. It was for me 😊It is for most people. I met several who work in Switzerland but live in France

Switzerland has four official languages

German, French, Italian and Romansh.
But you can still get by in English as pretty much everyone can speak it.

Drinking water is free

Just carry a water bottle. There were water fountains like every where I turned – only that most of them looked like those god carvings you see around Asia so you might miss them if you’re not keen.

Buy a Swiss travel pass

The pass will give you unlimited access to all modes of transport + many tourist attractions for the duration of your pass’ validity.
Be forewarned though, like everything else in this country, it’s damn expensive.
My 4-day pass cost more than my return ticket from Nairobi 😳.
But it was cheaper than paying for each trip separately.

Download the Swiss Rail app SBB (free on android, and I think iphone too)

This was a huge lifesaver for me. With the app I could track my train rides in real time.
The app also tells you exactly when to get off at the station, which platform and which direction to walk in😊 – puts London underground to shame.
The app also acts as stores your train pass in PDF format so you don’t have to carry your paper Swiss pass.

Time is kept to a T

Maybe it’s because they specialize in making watches.

Bonus tips

  1. Lauterbrunnen village is the place to be if you love nature
  2. The cows there looked so happy and even had views
  3. The Matterhorn’s views from every corner in Zermatt were spectacular
  4. Skydiving over the Swiss Alps should be right up your alley if you’re looking for something to add to your bucket list.
  5. I think the Glacier Express is overrated. Thank God a good chunk of the fee was included in my Swiss Pass otherwise I’d be so mad.
